An SM-3 (Block 1A) missile is launched from the Japanese destroyer JS Kirishima (DD 174), successfully intercepting a ballistic test missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. The test was conducted as a joint Japan/US exercise, with the U.S. Navy Aegis guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) and the U.S. Navy Aegis guided-missile destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59).
